Box Score

BLOOMSBURG- The Bloomsburg University field hockey team became the 2008 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships with a 5-0 win over Indiana University (Pa.) on Saturday.

The Huskies began scoring early with a goal 2:47 into the game by Ashley Miller (Shermans Dale/West Perry) with the assist coming from Jamie Vanartsdalen (Huntingdon Valley/Lower Moreland) who received the ball at the top of the circle off a penalty corner. Vanartsdalen then tipped in another goal off a strike from Kelsy Kress (Littlestown/Littlestown) at the 25:26 mark. The Crimson Hawks controlled the remainder of the half, but were unable to convert off of their seven penalty corners.

Bloomsburg dominated the second half of play with 10 shots on goal while not allowing IUP a single shot on net. After a series of seven penalty corners Maggey Bloskey (Danville/Danville) was able to convert off an assist from Samantha Kropa (Tunkhannock/Lackawanna Trail). The Huskies put the game away with two more goals in two minutes of play. Breanne Tobin (Perkasie/ Pennridge) knocked the first one in off a scramble in front of the net, while Vanartsdalen tipped one in off a Whitney Miller (Lancaster/Penn Manor) shot from the top of the circle.

Vanartsdalen was named the 2008 PSAC most valuable player with four goals and one assist in the tournament. She has 109 goals and 56 career assists, which makes her three assists away from tying and four from breaking the NCAA Division II career assists record currently set at 59.

Head Coach Jan Hutchinson earns her 15th PSAC title and is now 567-74-20 in her field hockey coaching career. "I'm proud of the way the girls played this weekend, defeating Shippensburg in the semi-finals and scoring five goals today against the defending PSAC champions. This brings us one step closer to winning the NCAA Division II title," said Hutchinson after the win.

The Huskies, now 21-1 on the season, will be competing in the NCAA Division II playoffs. The pairings will be announced by Monday at 5:00 p.m.
